Former Iowa standout Caitlin Clark has expressed to Hawkeyes head coach Jan Jensen her admiration for sophomore guard Chazadi Wright.

During her illustrious tenure at Iowa, Clark emerged as one of the most beloved basketball players in the country, a reputation that has since catapulted her to the forefront of the WNBA with the Indiana Fever. Despite grappling with injuries during her second season with the Fever, the 23-year-old was still named an All-Star, following up on her WNBA Rookie of the Year accolade.

Yet, no matter how high her star rises post-Iowa, Clark will forever be associated with the Hawkeyes. The Fever sensation continues to share a close bond with Jensen, who served as Lisa Bluder’s assistant at Iowa for two decades before ascending to the head coach position in 2024.

When recently quizzed by a reporter about her rapport with Clark, Jensen revealed not only that she and the WNBA poster girl keep in regular contact, but also that Clark is quite the fan of Wright.

“Caitlin and I text a lot,” said Jensen. “She hasn’t been back this year for a game.

“Hopefully, we’ll get her back for one at some point. But, she’s got new adventures and new mountains to climb. But she’ll text, win, lose or draw, that kid, she’s with me, and I think she knows that I’m with her.”

Jensen went on to describe how Clark reached out to her regarding “Chit-Chat” (Wright) and her displays since making the move from Georgia Tech to Iowa.

She added: “One time, Taylor Stremlow this year, she got a technical during a game, and Caitlin tweeted really quickly about it. And we had a funny text exchange because Caitlin is a little emotional, too.

“So that’s always fun, Caitlin’s really fun-loving, so those kind of things.

“But when we have a big win, she really loves Chit-Chat’s [Chazadi Wright] play. She thinks she’s really fun, so she’s texting me about her sometimes. I think she likes our young kids.

Jensen continued: “It’s just generals (their topics of discussion), a lot about life, how’s she doing, how’s it going, about my kids or whatever.

“It’s… not all the time, but just like it is with friends, you know who’s in your corner and who isn’t and with her, I think that’s really important, the reciprocation.

“Because she’s got a lot of people who are for her and so forth, you can’t let everyone in that… she’s got a really, really close circle and she’s got some of us that she knows will be there through it all.”
