She continued: “In the last few minutes, the Kremlin has said that Mr. Putin will hold the call with Donald Trump very soon.
“We’re going to bring you more on that. Very much, a developing story as we’re getting it,” she ended the report.
It is known Russia wants to take control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region as a condition for ending the war, despite not controlling the entire area. Ukraine has ruled out accepting this.
Addressing the much-contested region in eastern Ukraine, Zelensky told press “we have to respect our law and our people” and the “territory which we control”. He continued: “It’s the land of our nation, the land for a lot of generations.”
When asked whether they had made an agreement on zones in the Donbas region, President Trump said: “The word agree is too strong, but we’re getting closer to an agreement. That’s one of the big issues. It’s unresolved, but it’s getting a lot closer.”
Trump has said he and Zelensky spoke with European Leaders during their initial meeting, including the leaders of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Poland and Norway, as well as European Union chiefs.
We thought it was appropriate to speak with them, and our meeting was excellent,” he said.
“We covered, some would say, 95%, I don’t know what percent, but we have made a lot of progress on ending that war.” Trump said a peace plan could be agreed in a “few weeks” if negotiations “go well”.
