Grab a coat for your New Year’s Eve plans; it’s frigid in the D.C. area Wednesday and there could be a few flurries in the first few hours of 2026.
Things will stay mostly dry and breezy Wednesday, with southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph.
“To ring in the new year, at least we’re going to be dry, but still temperatures around freezing come midnight and after that there’s a chance for a few flurries across the area,” 7News First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin said. “Not expecting any accumulation, but just conversational flurries if you’re going to be out extra, extra late tonight.”
Temperatures remain a touch below average with highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s on Wednesday.
The freezing temperatures and chance of flurries continue on New Year’s Day in the D.C. area.
The National Weather Service said some flurries could pop up early Thursday morning, with the highest chance along and north of Interstate 66 and U.S. Route 50.
“For the first day of the new year, temperatures will start off subfreezing, with afternoon highs below average, in the 30s,” Rudin said. “There’s a chance for a few snow flurries with a weather maker sliding in from the north.”
