I leaned the bike against a post to get a look at new construction at 2125 Willamette Ave. NE on Jan. 2, 2026.

On the day after New Year’s, there was nothing sensational to see on my first bike ride of 2026 into Albany’s Willamette Neighborhood. But a building site caught my eye.

This area along the river on the east side of the old part of Albany is not ritzy or new. Which is one reason I like it. Another reason is that it’s out of the way and has very little traffic.

So I was a little surprised a few days ago to see, from a couple blocks away, the soaring rafters of a new house being built. On Friday I stopped to take a closer look.

The house is under construction at 2125 Willamette Ave. NE. It’s a single-family home being built by the property owners on the former site of a manufactured house.

My impression from afar that it was big was not wrong. The city building permit calls it a “2,950 square foot residential home.” Elsewhere on the permit, the square footage is shown as 4,880, but presumably that includes the daylight basement created by tall concrete foundation walls.

The permit values the construction at $596,699, a far cry from the property’s current assessed value of $84,740.

Judging by the shape of the roof and the long overhanging porch roof in front, this will be quite a handsome new home. (hh)
