After the exhausting and emotional news cycle Thursday, Friday was about lining up the last bits of unfinished business on the NHL trade market. Should the Edmonton Oilers take a shot at acquiring Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry? Sportsnet made the case for doing it. The same goes for the Calgary Flames dealing Nazem Kadri. Elsewhere in the Daily, a former Penguins winger will get a PTO with the New York Rangers, why the Detroit Red Wings should go all out for Jason Robertson, and we examined the Penguins’ trade gift that keeps on giving.

I want to thank you for your restraint in the comments on Friday. I only edited one comment for language, and as far as I could see, we didn’t delete any. The sexual assault trial was a lightning rod for a lot of different emotions and reactions, but the only comment we edited used language that could have held us liable for libel (though I don’t believe the reader had any ill intent).

On the trade front, PHN has held off on a few speculative Penguins trade stories because–quite frankly–I thought we were going to see a trade or three by now. Even though a full quarter of our audience leaves when Steelers training camp starts (only to return in January with gifts of divine knowledge and condemnation, you know the types), we will start to dig a little deeper into the possibilities surrounding Jarry and other veteran players.

Away we go.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Let’s revisit the Penguins trade that keeps on giving, and will for a couple of more years, too. When the Penguins traded Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes, they got three prospects, an NHL winger, and a draft pick. General manager Kyle Dubas further multiplied those assets. So, here’s the full trade tree and what it has meant for the Penguins rebuild.

Steelers Now: The first few days of training camp are showing something that could be quite positive for the Steelers offense, but it does appear there is a problem on the offensive line. Alan Saunders has the Steelers takeaways.

Pittsburgh Baseball Now: Friday night, the Pirates played 11 innings but had just one … ONE … hit, and lost. Moving on, the MLB trade rumors are swirling around Oneil Cruz. John Perrotto gets honest–what a Yankees-Pirates trade would look like.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: With Arturs Shilovs in the mix, should the Penguins trade away Tristan Jarry? Sportsnet not only asked that question, but circled the Edmonton Oilers as the team that should consider it. I’ve often made the case that Jarry is much better than Penguins fans have given him credit for, though last season was a disaster. Here’s the Oilers’ case to get a goalie, and maybe it should be Jarry.

And the boys up North listed five landing spots for Nazem Kadri, too.

NHL.com: This contract surprised me by its length and value. The Carolina Hurricanes dropped a nice payday on rookie Jackson Blake for eight years and $45 million.

That’s a lot of risk for a player who had 34 points last season.

Forever Blueshirts: Remember Conor Sheary? He’s bounced around the league the last few years, but he signed a PTO for a chance to catch on with former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan and the New York Rangers.

Detroit Hockey Now: Jason Robertson. Detroit Red Wings. Kevin Allen thinks it is a very good fit and uses some pretty good circumstantial evidence, including the Red Wings’ acquisition of Alex DeBrincat and the urgent need for GM Steve Yzerman to accelerate the next phase. It would be a big-time Red Wings trade.
