RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Raleigh Police are searching for two people after a driver fled an attempted traffic stop on Tuesday.
Officers tried to stop a car at 1:08 p.m. that they said was driving recklessly near New Bern Avenue near Corporation Parkway. The car turned on Beacon Lake Drive, and officers followed it down a dirt road behind a business. As officers approached the car, a passenger jumped out, fired a shot, dropped the weapon, and ran off into nearby woods.
The driver of the car, a white 2018 Honda Accord, then backed up and sped away. Officers told ABC11 that the vehicle was not stolen, and they have an idea of who the suspects are.
No one was hurt.
A passenger jumped out after a traffic stop and fired a shot as officers approached before running into the woods near New Bern Avenue.
Traffic was backed up on New Bern Avenue as more than a dozen police vehicles swarmed the area.
“It was a lot. I would say, with the unmarked cars, but with the marked cars, maybe about eight,” said Diane Powell, who was in the area. “But like I said, it was all parked in the back on Corporation and down this way.”
RPD said that as of 2:30 p.m., the scene had been cleared, but no one had been taken into custody.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and contact law enforcement if they see any suspicious activity.
Workers nearby told ABC11 that they ran for cover when they heard the gunfire.
“I was here cleaning, and we heard two cars come speeding by, a white car, which was a Honda, followed by a police car,” said Roberto Penagos López, a worker at a mechanic shop. “We saw someone get out of the white car running, the police were following him, and then we heard a gunshot, and we went running for cover.”

Investigators said they recovered a weapon at the scene. They said they have descriptions of the suspects, but those details have not yet been released.
“I was scared because it’s a little unusual to see something like this,” López said. “We just wanted to hide because we thought they were outside, and we said they could have come inside here next.”
