MONROE, La. (KNOE) – On July 26, 1775, the Second Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin as Postmaster General of the United Colonies.
The founders believed a free exchange of news, ideas and opinions was crucial to developing a democracy. Through horseback, steamboat, rail and train, the mail has been delivered in both cities and rural communities.
The United States Postal Service now processes around 371 million pieces of mail per day.
