The 32-year-old left Leeds United on a free transfer over the summer, but he opted to remain in Yorkshire while dropping down to the Championship to sign for the Blades on a short-term deal.

His contract is set to expire after their FA Cup tie against Mansfield Town this weekend.

As a result, it has been suggested by reporter Alan Nixon that the Blues are keeping an eye on Bamford’s situation, looking to pounce if he leaves Bramall Lane this month.

However, transfer expert Pete O’Rourke – via Football Insider – has claimed that he is ‘expected to accept Sheffield United’s offer’ instead of the contract proposal from Town, remaining ‘loyal to manager Chris Wilder’.

Ipswich are still expected to be in the market for a new striker this month.

Alex’s verdict

Until the ink is dry on Bamford’s new Sheffield United contract, nothing is done. Remember the Chuba Akpom saga over the summer?

That being said, I don’t expect him to be Town’s new no.9. Is there the chance that the noise was used as leverage to secure a better deal at his current club? You can never rule it out.

There are a lot of boxes that Bamford ticks, especially in the short term, but I do think that Ipswich might look for someone with a higher ceiling to can have an impact in the mid-to-long term.

For someone of his age and with his injury record, he needs somewhere to play week in, week out, knowing that his future is secure.

Does uprooting midway through the campaign to battle it out with George Hirst, Ivan Azon and Chuba Akpom make sense when he’s a nailed-on starter for the Blades? What would next season look like if he signed for McKenna’s side and then found himself back in the Premier League? That’s a lot of question marks.

Let’s wait and see, but I think Bamford will stay where he is.
