Man arrested for allegedly entering and breaking items in tenant’s home

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A Mesa County man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly entering and destroying belongings in a tenant’s property.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the 2100 block of Broadway. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), which was the responding agency, identified the man as 51-year-old Gene Gregory Gana.

According to MCSO, the resident was not in the home during the incident and was able to leave the property unharmed.

After evidence was collected and reviewed, MCSO deputies issued a warrant for Gana’s arrest. He was charged with second-degree burglary of a dwelling, which is a third-degree felony.

Gana had his first court appearance on Thursday to set bond.

During the hearing, the resident spoke to the judge, stating that Gana had destroyed a phone in her bedroom, along with belongings meant for her infant son, who is on oxygen, and other items. Later in the hearing, the judge mentioned that the affidavit pointed out that the victim reportedly became fearful when she could not get to the oxygen for her son.

When addressing bond, the prosecution requested a cash bond, bringing up Gana’s previous criminal history, consisting of felonies and misdemeanors. Although multiple charges had been dismissed, Gana reportedly has a history of ignoring court orders and, therefore, according to the prosecution, was not someone the court can be confident with obeying future orders.

In 2019, Gana was arrested after a two-and-a-half-hour standoff at a home in the 2100 block of Broadway. At the time, he had two active warrants for his arrest: a felony warrant from the MCSO and a parole violation from the Department of Corrections.

According to Gana’s defense, his last conviction took place in 2016, and his current pending cases are misdemeanors and a traffic-related offense.

Gana’s defence requested a personal recognizance bond, suggesting that, based on the allegations, the situation was not sought out but rather arose out of him and the tenant as a civil dispute.

Gana was given a $10,000 cash-only bond and will make another court appearance on Jan. 14 at 8:30 a.m.
