A 40-year-old Paia man died after being shot by police officers responding to a terroristic threatening call Thursday night in Wailuku, according to the Maui Police Department.

MPD officials said this afternoon that the man “succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”

His identity was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, police said.

At about 7:27 p.m., the MPD received a 911 call reporting a male armed with a firearm in an open field off Kuikahi Drive.

Officers arrived about three minutes later and “encountered the male, who refused to comply with the officer’s commands. During the encounter, the male opened fire, at which time officers returned fire, striking the male,” MPD officials said in an initial news release late Thursday that did not mention the condition of the suspect.

No other injuries were reported.

MPD said the officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, and that the investigation continues.
