They are friendly exes now, but that wasn’t always a sure thing for Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. In a revealing new interview, the 53-year-old mom of three shared her devastation after her 2015 split from Ben, also 53.
“The fact of it is what was hard,” she tells Marie Claire magazine. “The actual breaking up of a family is what was hard. Losing a true partnership and friendship is what was hard.”

Despite her pain — Ben denied having an affair with the kids’ nanny — the Last Thing He Told Me star leaned on friends and decided to work with her ex instead of against him.
“I’m able to co-parent at this point in time with peace and equanimity and a partnership that I didn’t know I would ever get back to,” she told the mag, offering some words of hope. “I think it’s important for women to know, when they think, ‘Oh, I’ll never see that, I’ll never have that feeling, I’ll never be friends with this person again,’ [that] time is… the opportunity to heal.”
