Mickey Rourke publicly denounced a GoFundMe fundraiser that raised $100,000 on his behalf.
The actor even went as far as calling it a “cruel embarrassment.”
Earlier this month, People reported that the star of “Sin City” and “The Wrestler” was served a notice Dec. 18 to pay $59,100 in back rent he allegedly owes to his landlord or to vacate his Los Angeles property within three days.
In an interview with The New York Times, the actor’s manager, Kimberly Hines, claimed Rourke asked for her assistance.
A GoFundMe campaign was then set up in his name by a member of Rourke’s management team, Liya-Joelle Jones, which accumulated over $100,000 in donations.
On Jan. 5, Rourke released a video on his Instagram account, denouncing the GoFundMe and claiming he had no knowledge of it.
“Something’s come up that … I’m really frustrated, confused and I don’t understand … Somebody set up some kind of foundation or fund for me, to donate money, like charity. And that’s not me, OK?” the actor said in the clip.
Hines disputed these claims, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, saying the actor is now living in a West Hollywood Hotel and his previous living situation is “uninhabitable.”
She added that Rourke “didn’t fully understand what a GoFundMe was when she presented the idea to him.”
The GoFundMe page was then put on pause and was removed shortly thereafter. Hines stated that if Rourke doesn’t want the money, donors would be reimbursed.
Rourke once again took aim at the GoFundMe in a series of social media posts, stating it’s a “Vicious, cruel god–m lie to hustle money using my f–kin name so motherf–in enbarassing.”
The actor also noted, “There will b severe repercussions to the individual who did this very bad thing to me, and anyone who knows me knows payback k will be god–m severe!!!!!!”
