SK Telecom, which was hit with a record-high fine by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) over a personal data leak affecting about 23 million subscribers, has filed an administrative lawsuit challenging the sanction.
According to industry sources on the 19th, SK Telecom filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Administrative Court in the afternoon seeking to overturn the PIPC’s decision to impose the fine.
The move comes just one day before the deadline for filing a revocation suit under the Administrative Litigation Act, which falls on the 20th.
Previously, the PIPC announced that its investigation into a hacking incident at SK Telecom in August last year found that 23,244,649 users’ data had been leaked, including mobile phone numbers, International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) numbers, and USIM authentication keys, among 25 types of information.
Holding the company responsible for inadequate security measures, the commission imposed a fine of 134.791 billion won, the largest since its establishment. This far exceeds the 100 billion won in fines levied on Google and Meta Platforms in 2022.
SK Telecom stated, “We intend to seek a thorough review of the PIPC’s fine decision by the court.”
