The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially confirmed virtual interviews with seven candidates for the team’s vacant head coach position. Per Director of Communications Burt Lauten, the team met virtually with the following candidates: Panthers DC Ejiro Evero, Packers DC Jeff Hafley, 49ers OC Klay Kubiak, Chargers DC Jesse Minter, Rams Pass Game Coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Rams DC Chris Shula, and Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver.

Per Lauten, in-person interviews will begin this week.

The only two reported candidates not listed above are Vikings DC Brian Flores and longtime head coach and Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy. Though not shared by Lauten, the Steelers will hold first-time meetings with them face-to-face this week. Flores’ meeting will reportedly occur on Tuesday.

Most of this list was previously reported. Some of it has essentially become outdated. Hafley will become the Miami Dolphins head coach, taking him off the board. This leaves only eight eligible-for-hire confirmed or reported candidates.

However, there’s one piece of new information. Lauten’s tweet confirms the team had met with Carolina defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. This had been previously reported as a request, but without an official date.

Presumably, Pittsburgh won’t bring in all eight remaining candidates for in-person meetings. In past cycles, the team has brought in four finalists. That isn’t guaranteed to be the case this time around, but anyone receiving a second interview is notable. Reportedly, Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver will have a second meeting with the team later this week. Per the Rooney Rule, two minority candidates must have face-to-face meetings with the team.

Assuming Flores and Weaver come in, Pittsburgh will satisfy that rule. Still, both men are serious candidates for the job. Flores spent 2022 on the Steelers’ staff, while Weaver has received several head coach interviews over the years. He is drawing current interest from the Baltimore Ravens.

Pittsburgh is looking to replace Mike Tomlin after 19 years on the job. The next hire will be the franchise’s fourth since 1969, following Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Tomlin.
