The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has announced temporary closures at several wildlife management areas statewide, including locations that could affect hunters and outdoor users in the Twin Lakes region, as part of ongoing feral hog control efforts.

From Jan. 19 through March 31, select WMAs will be closed for one to two days at a time while professional pilots and crews with USDA APHIS Wildlife Services conduct aerial operations to reduce feral hog populations. The closures are being scheduled around weather conditions and will not occur on any duck-hunting WMAs until after the Youth and Veterans Duck Hunt on Feb. 7-8.

Among the areas of interest to Twin Lakes residents is Gene Rush Wildlife Management Area, which is included on the list of sites that may see short-term access restrictions. AGFC officials say closures will be clearly marked, and staff will be on-site to manage road and access points during operations.

AGFC Director Doug Schoenrock said the timing of the closures is designed to minimize disruption while allowing crews to take advantage of optimal conditions for hog control. He also noted the operations come at no cost to the commission.

“These efforts are critical to protecting habitat and wildlife resources,” said AGFC Feral Hog Program Coordinator Ryan Farney. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we carry out these strategic control initiatives.”

AGFC says exact closure dates cannot be set in advance due to weather and site-specific conditions. Local outdoor users are encouraged to check for posted notices before traveling to WMAs during the coming weeks.
