Very cold temperatures are expected across portions of East Tennessee, southwest Virginia and southwest North Carolina tonight, with dangerous wind chills possible in higher elevations, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
Forecasters said wind chills could dip below zero late tonight into Wednesday morning in the mountains, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Looking ahead, a developing storm system is expected to approach the region this weekend, bringing the potential for impactful wintry precipitation. As colder air moves into the area, rain could transition to snow or other winter weather in parts of the region.
The National Weather Service cautioned that there is significant uncertainty regarding the track and strength of the system, which will determine the type and extent of precipitation.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts throughout the week and prepare for possible winter weather impacts, especially during weekend travel plans.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook covers much of East Tennessee, including Carter County, along with adjacent areas of southwest Virginia and southwest North Carolina.
