EXCLUSIVE: Cinetic has inked Toronto multihyphenate Jay McCarrol, the creator behind SXSW mockumentary Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie for management.

McCarrol co-wrote, starred, executive produced and composed the music for Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, which he created with his longtime collaborators Matt Johnson and Zapruder Films. McCarrol co-created the Nirvanna franchise. The Matt Johnson-directed pic premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival and went on to play TIFF with NEON picking up the movie for a Feb. 13 theatrical release this year. The film is sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from 34 reviews and was the No. 1 rated film on Letterboxd in 2025 and 2026.

Outside of the Nirvanna franchise, McCarrol is known for his work on BlackBerry, animated series Matt & Bird Break Loose, and has continued his longstanding work with Johnson and Zapruder on their upcoming feature with A24, Tony, the Anthony Bourdain biopic. His work as a composer extends to Evan Morgan’s The Kid Detective, starring Adam Brody, and Finn Wolfhard & Billy Bryck’s Hell of a Summer. McCarrol has toured Canada as a pop artist, penned jingles, and is a former musical director at Second City.
