Possible changes coming to moose-hunting season in Maine

  • January 23, 2026

GREENVILLE, Maine (WABI) – Community members and some people from outside of town gathered in Greenville for a public hearing Thursday afternoon.

This comes as Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is proposing changes to the moose hunting season to include adding a September hunting season for antlered moose and adjusting the timing of the October antlered moose season.

People in favor of expanding the season say that adjusting the timing of the October season will ensure that it will always occur during a time period when moose are more responsive to calling.

Detractors say that it could have a harsh impact on the local economy.

“This is really bad for the Greenville area in my opinion and could result in job losses. If our fall season falls apart, it may result in the closing of our seasonal timeframe,” said one attendee against the proposal.

One person in favor said that the season is already short.

“If warm temperatures, high winds, heavy rains land during a very short season, many hunters are going to have a hard time. Spreading the hunt across an additional week would immediately improve the overall experience for hunters coming to these WMD’s for what is often times a once in a lifetime hunt,” he said.

If you’d like to make your voice heard on the proposal you can call 287-5202.

The deadline to comment is February 2nd.
