Alexey Marchenko’s NHL days with the Detroit Red Wings might not be the stuff of memories. He suited up for 110 NHL games for Detroit, accounting for three goals and 16 assists between 2013-17. Marchenko also spent parts of three seasons with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Since returning to his native Russia, things have gone much better for Marchenko. He’s spent the past eight seasons in the KHL. Recently, Marchenko, 33, was agreeing to a two-year contract extension with AK Bars Kazan.
The pact will pay him 85 million Russian rubles. At the current exchange rate, that works out to a cool $1 million.
Svechnikov Staying In KHL
Detroit’s 2015 first-round draft pick, winger Evgeny Svechnikov is also staying in the KHL for next. Svechnikov signed a deal with Amur Khabarovsk.
He spent last season with Torpedo, playing for former Red Wings star Igor Larionov.
Newpower Remains In AHL
Former Griffins defenseman Wyatt Newpower will be back in the AHL again next season. He agreed to a contract with the Iowa Wild.

Newpower played last season with the Bridgeport Islanders. The defenseman was with the Griffins from 2021-24, playing 148 games while producing 6-18-24 numbers.
Ice Chips
Madison Bowey, a Red Wings defenseman from 2019-20, is joining Augsburger Panthers of Germany’s DEL. He spent last season in the AHL with the Cleveland Monsters . . . Forward Brendan Perlini, a Red Wings player for 39 games in 2019-20, will be playing in Switzerland next season for HC Lugano. His teammates will include goalie Joren van Pottelberghe, a 2015 Red Wings draft pick.
Center Axel Holmstrom, selected by Detroit in the 2014 NHL entry draft, will be playing in Czechia next season for HC Litvinov. Though he never played for the Red Wings, Holmstrom did spend parts of three seasons with the Griffins from 2016-19 . . . Forward Robert Mastrosimone, a 2019 Red Wings draftee, signed with the AHL Charlotte Checkers . . . Joe Snively, who played for the Griffins last season, has joined Djurgardens of Sweden’s SHL.
