OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. (WKRC/CBS Newspath) – A nearly 136-year-old shipwreck has been exposed at Island Beach State Park after weeks of beach erosion caused by rough surf and persistent wind and wave action.
The wreck is believed to be the Lawrence N. McKenzie, a 98.2-foot schooner that ran aground March 21, 1890, while carrying a cargo of oranges from Puerto Rico to New York City. All eight crew members survived, according to historical records.
Built in 1883, the vessel’s homeport was Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Park officials said winter beach erosion is common at Island Beach State Park and is part of a natural cycle in which high-energy waves and storms remove sand and narrow beaches. While most beaches rebuild during the summer months, this winter’s erosion has revealed portions of the long-buried shipwreck.
Staff members are monitoring the site and reminding visitors that historic artifacts and cultural resources are protected. Touching or removing any part of the wreck is prohibited, and violations may result in summonses issued by New Jersey State Park Police.
Information about the shipwreck was confirmed using the New Jersey Maritime Museum’s shipwreck database.
