Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) shared trail-cam photos of a white elk, noting that the genetic condition that causes this pale coloration (leucism) is “not common at all.” Unlike albinism, leucism affects an animal’s hair/fur but not the color of its eyes.

“Pretty cool capture from a game cam,” wrote Montana FWP in its Instagram post sharing the images. “These photos show a white elk, and to clarify, this is a leucistic elk. Leucism is a genetic condition that causes a partial loss of pigmentation. [. . . ] Leucism isn’t common at all . . . Nature never runs out of surprises.”
