WASHINGTON (KFSN) — Federal operations in Minnesota are the focus of conversations as Mayors from around the nation gather in Washington, D.C.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer is one of the leading voices at the United States Conference of Mayors.

Today, he shared his perspective as a police chief turned politician on the tactics being used by ICE agents.

“After spending 40 years in the Fresno police department, last 18 as police chief. There is one thing I’ve learned that is fundamental for policing and that you have to earn the trust of the people in which you serve. And that trust is very delicate and it’s hard to gain and easy to lose,” Mayor Dyer said.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors has previously put out a statement calling the death of Alex Pretti a “tragedy” and advocating for de-escalation efforts.

Today, Mayor Dyer complimented the Trump Administration on efforts to secure the border.

He also called for a pathway to citizenship and immigration enforcement with tactics that still keep communities safe:

“We support legitimate enforcement efforts by ICE to remove serious criminals, but we want them to be held to the same standard we hold our local police departments to in terms of being professional, well-trained, and de-escalating situations if possible.”

Mayor Dyer is a Co-Chair for the Mayors and Police Chiefs Task Force.
