Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen surprised reporters when he showed up to his first press conference of the offseason on crutches.

The quarterback, 29, was noticeably limping as he entered the media room in a walking boot and with the help of crutches, as seen in videos shared on social media.

At the podium, Allen revealed he had surgery on a broken bone in his right foot stemming from an injury he suffered in Week 16 of the season. “I had a little broken bone in there, so they just went in and took it out and cleaned it up,” he shared.

“It’s a little painful right now, but it wasn’t a crazy surgery,” added Allen, describing the past few weeks as “painful” and “not an ideal situation.”

The NFL’s reigning MVP, who is also expecting his first child with wife Hailee Steinfeld, said it wouldn’t be “too long” before he’s participating in organized team activities again. “I’ll be back and [it] shouldn’t hinder anything,” he said.

The Bills were eliminated by the Denver Broncos in a 33-30 playoff overtime thriller on Sunday, Jan. 17. After the loss, Allen broke down in tears and apologized to his teammates. “I feel like I let my teammates down tonight,” he said at the time.

On Thursday, Allen said he still feels “sick” about the way the Bills season ended and feels like he had “a part” in the organization letting head coach Sean McDermott go. “That’s the hard part to take in from my perspective, but that’s reality,” Allen said. “I still believe that we had the team to win the Super Bowl, and again, we didn’t make one more play, and that’s pointing the thumb right at me,” he said.

Going forward, he told reporters he’s focused on being “the best quarterback, the best teammate, the best leader that I can be for the Buffalo Bills.”

Allen also spoke about his new role as a father. “This is the most important thing I’ll ever be in my life, being a dad,” the NFL star said.
