Frustration boiled over in West Hollywood Thursday night as residents packed a community meeting over what they say is a growing and dangerous coyote problem in their neighborhood.

A standing room-only crowd filled Plummer Park as residents told city officials they feel overwhelmed by aggressive coyote activity.

Neighbors from Poinsettia Drive, Greenacre Avenue and nearby streets describe seeing packs of coyotes at all hours of the day. Some blame illegal feeding and also makeshift dens under homes.

“We are seeing coyotes day and night. All the time,” one neighbor described during the meeting. “We’re seeing them in our front yards. We’re seeing them walking down the street. When you encounter one, whether it is their territory or ours, it is frightening. It is a scary thing. And I think that we’ve come to the city because we’re asking for some level of safety.”

City officials say mating season can increase sightings and confirmed enforcement is underway – including fines for feeding wildlife and securing crawl spaces.

Community Safety Director Danny Rivas says patrols will increase, problem properties will be inspected and a larger meeting with county wildlife officials is planned for later this spring.
