PEORIA (25News Now) – The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a deputy was shot several times after a traffic stop late Saturday night.
A statement posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page said a deputy stopped a vehicle at 9:52 p.m. in the 1000 block of South Western Avenue.
The driver ran away and the deputy was shot several times. The deputy is being treated for serious injuries at a local hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. The release said Peoria Police are assisting in the investigation.

A 25News crew saw a large police presence at the intersection of West Garden and South Blaine Steet. In addition to sheriff’s deputies and Peoria Police, officers were on the scene from East Peoria and Illinois State Police.
