The Raiders were scheduled to meet with Klint Kubiak on Saturday, and according to a commenter on social media, it sounds like Mark Davis may have sat down with the league’s most coveted coordinator on Friday night, as well.
Kubiak is technically still in the mix for the Cardinals’ job, but the Raiders are considered his most likely destination, though not much is known about how his interviews went (or are going) this weekend.
Whether or not that’s good news for the Raiders remains to be seen, but according to The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen, it’s probably a positive sign that so little information has reached the public on Kubiak and the Raiders.
Nguyen believes Kubiak wouldn’t want news about his future dominating headlines ahead of the Super Bowl and thinks that if the Raiders were told ‘No’ by Kubiak’s camp, they would pivot quickly to the next candidate in line.
It has been rumored that Ejiro Evero is the fallback option in Las Vegas is Kubiak doesn’t get the job, but Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter seems to think Mike LaFleur is still in the mix, as well.
“Coming into the search, the top two candidates were Klint Kubiak and Mike LaFleur, who are both still available and on the table,” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast on Saturday. “Both coaches, whether it’s Klint or Mike or whomever, already know who they want to bring as staff.”
Whether it’s Evero or LaFleur behind Kubiak, every indication is that Tom Brady and the decision makers in Las Vegas are locked in on Kubiak and it would be a disappointment to miss on their top coaching candidate for the second year in a row.
Flagship radio host ‘JT the Brick’ made a big statement on Kubiak’s candidacy on Wednesday, saying the Seattle offensive coordinator doesn’t necessarily need a second interview to convince the Raiders.
“I’ve interviewed a bunch of people over the last week or two. Everybody believes [Kubiak] is the guy. It’s his offer to accept or deny,” JT said on his Raider Nation Radio show on Thursday.
“Nobody knows what he’s going to do because he’s embedded in preparation for the Super Bowl, but he’s having his second interview and someone told me off the record that he doesn’t even need a second interview. He’s one of the only candidates that you really don’t need a second interview with. He had an interview. If you like him, you can hire him.”
“You don’t need a second interview. And we all think that everybody needs a second interview. No, not him. He doesn’t need a second interview. There’s nothing that they’re going to look at in the second interview that’s going to say ‘No, man, we were thinking you as our number one choice, and now you’re out.’ I would doubt that very much. I think he’s going to be fine, but he’s going to give the Raiders a second interview that I’ve been made aware of from inside the building,” JT continued.
“If he nails it and he does a great job, and maybe this interview is going to be even more in-depth with Tom Brady, because when Tom Brady is calling all these Seahawk games, he really can’t sit down one-on-one with Kubiak.”
