Media coverage of this story, and others like it, rightfully raises questions about the process of journalism. Having a trusted news source is vital, so I wanted to share some of the topics I discussed with viewers this week regarding our process of news reporting with all of you. Our responsibility is clarity and accuracy. When breaking news unfolds quickly, the volume of information can be overwhelming. You will see videos and theories immediately circulating on social feeds. But verification of facts takes time. There are several steps before videos of an incident can get on our air or posted to our website and social media. Our newsroom works to authenticate images or videos – making sure they are not manipulated or AI-generated. When we receive official statements from agencies and elected officials, we report them as stated by them. We also work to fact check those statements and add context to the best of our ability. Our journalists do not assume intent or motive. Our staff works as quickly as possible to ensure you have accurate information in a timely manner. We know in stressful and uncertain times heightened emotions can influence perception. We hope that our practice of fact-based journalism and our community’s interest in the issues that matter most will provide some common ground to find a path forward.
