As it happened, Monday was Groundhog Day and that song was featured in the movie.
Stunting is a common practice in radio when a station will likely change formats.
WE 102.9, known as KINK-FM HD2, had been playing rap and hip-hop.
Late Monday night, Sonny & Cher was replaced with John Williams’ “Star Wars (Main Title),” playing on a continuous loop.
The station is playing roughly two minutes of the track that originally lasts almost six minutes.
“SIGNAL ACQUISITION IN PROGRESS,” the station’s website says. “Re-establishing connection to the 102.9 coordinate. Do you copy Portland?”
The site features a countdown clock that would expire at midnight Thursday.
On Monday, Connoisseur Media Operations Manager Ross MacLeod told KATU News, “You should have all the answers you need on Wednesday.”
