The traditional Super Bowl media day has been slightly rebranded as Super Bowl opening night. While the time and prominence of the event has changed, the unpredictability has remained the same. Alongside journalists and professional sports writers doing their job are folks from all walks of life, many of whom are looking for a “viral” moment. Well, when it came to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, those seeking such a moment got what they were looking for.

During the opening night, Sam Darnold received some rather unusual gifts. One of them was this gigantic smoked ham hat, along with a pin that said “Ham for Sam.” Yes, you read that correctly, that was a real sentence. Don’t believe me? Check the proof for yourself!

The ham hat is certainly a memorable gift, but it wasn’t the only one. Darnold also received something unique to his own family lineage. You see, Darnold’s grandfather was a man named Dick Hammer who was once a Marlboro Man. Again, I’m not making this up either! At opening night, someone presented Darnold with a painting of him as a Marlboro Man himself, and the quarterback was seemingly touched by the gesture.

I think its safe to say this Super Bowl run is going to be rather memorable for Sam Darnold for many reasons.
