PORTLAND, Ore. — The once-popular Lloyd Center will be closing “sometime this year.”

Urban Renaissance Group, which owns the mall, said it has big plans to not only demolish the existing structure, but also create a brand new one with apartments, shops, and restaurants.

“The framework will allow for the creation of this new neighborhood with new streets, new parks and open space, and new opportunities for development of a wide mix of uses across the site,” Thomas Kilbane, the managing director, told KATU News.

Kilbane’s team also confirmed there “won’t be another holiday shopping season at Lloyd Center.”

“Once the master plan is approved, it will allow us to go through a subdivision process to create development parcels. And at some point the mall’s demolished and it will clear the way to build these new streets and new open spaces and allow for the construction of all of this new development,” Kilbane said.

Despite plans to revamp the mall, more than 5,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the demolition of the mall to stop. According to the petition, organizers say the goal is “preserving and maintaining the current structure that is Lloyd Center Mall.”
