ASHLAND — The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office has put out a safety bulletin to address recent incidents that involved minors purchasing and using over-the-counter medication, Benadryl.

According to a press release, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating several incidents where minors have purchased the medication and ingested more than the recommended dosage, resulting in medical emergencies.

The press release said that during the investigation, it was indicated that minors might have been providing Benadryl to friends, who had also ingested more than the recommended dosage.

Though the purchase of Benadryl by minors is not illegal in Ohio, the sheriff’s office said it is concerned that minors may be using the medication for “recreational satisfaction.”

“I’m asking local businesses, schools, and the general public to be vigilant in identifying any activity harmful to our children,” Sheriff Kurt Schneider said.

Schneider has asked local businesses that sell over-the-counter medication, such as Benadryl, to review their policies and practices about the sale of over-the-counter medication to minors.

Anyone who has information about similar incidents may contact Detective Aaron Crites at 491-289-3911.
