After nearly six years together, Halle Berry and Van Hunt are engaged. Berry revealed the news on Thursday in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, where she cleared up some “confusion” about their relationship status. “There’s some confusion that he asked to marry me and I said ‘no,’” Berry said. “But that’s not the case?” Fallon asked. “No, that’s not the case. I did not say ‘no,’ we just don’t have a date — but of course I said ‘yes,’ I would marry him!” Berry then showed off a sparkly new addition to her finger, saying Hunt “did put a little ring on it.”
The confusion Berry mentioned was likely a reference to an interview the couple did in June, during which Hunt told the Today show he’d already popped the question. “So I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” Hunt said at the time. “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.” Berry explained during the interview that the holdup mostly had to do with both of them having been married already: “Well, I’ve been married three times. Van has been married once, and so, no, we don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way.”
Still, Berry said she did think marriage was in their future. “I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” she said. “And I feel like I should, we should, get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression.”
Berry has said she and Hunt, a Grammy-winning musician, were introduced through Hunt’s brother in 2020. Their relationship began in the early days of the pandemic, and they spent months talking on the phone before meeting in person. Berry recently told The Cut how happy they are together. “I’m in the best relationship I have ever had,” she said.
