Fallout actor Walton Goggins has weighed in on a fan theory that the second season of the Prime Video series could effectively serve as the fifth entry of the video game that inspired the hit science fiction series.
There has been an ongoing theory that Fallout season 2 was either a direct sequel to the most recent game or an adaptation of the next one (Fallout 5), which will pick up where the show left off. This means that the Prime Video series would be canon to its source material. What makes hardcore gamers even more convinced about this rumor (despite it not being confirmed by anyone) is that the creative team behind the show has repeatedly described the series as a significant new chapter of the franchise rather than an adaptation.
Goggins, who plays Ghoul in the show, explained in an interview with Game Informer that while the series was crafted to stay true to the game’s lore, the series is designed as a standalone story set within the Fallout universe rather than a continuation of any specific game. He added that the creators and writers of the TV show treated the project as original material, even though several fans of the franchise believed that it was canon to the video games.
The actor also mentioned that this theory might have gained so much traction because of how dedicated they were to keeping the spirit of the Fallout franchise alive and the amount of research that went into the show’s storyline. However, he jokingly added that there was a chance that the theory might be true and that he was just never told about it.
For me, it was all on the page. They did their homework, and it was built into the DNA of the story that they created, and this isn’t like Fallout 1, Fallout 2, or Fallout 3… it’s its own thing. It’s original content within the Fallout world. In some ways, people have said, ‘Is it Fallout 5?’ That’s way above my paygrade.
Although season 2 might not be a continuation of Fallout 4, it will influence the fifth game. According to Bethesda Game Studios’ director and executive producer, Tom Howard, Fallout 5 will take elements of the TV series, so certain parts of it would be semi-canon to the video games.
Fallout seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Prime Video.
