Wildwood officials are encouraging residents and businesses to practice conservation measures, following the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s declaration of a Modified Phase II Water Shortage and associated water use restrictions.

Restrictions are effective Feb. 8 through July 1, in response to below-average rainfall during the summer rainy season. According to SWFWMD, a 13-inch rainfall deficit exists as of December, compared to the historical average 12-month total.

In Wildwood, as well as all of Sumter County, lawn watering is restricted to no more than once per week during designated times on a specific day based on the property’s address number.

“Water can be considered our most essential natural resource,” said Jason Martin, the city’s utility director. “During periods of drought—which often correspond to the dormant season for lawns—it is especially important to irrigate responsibly. Eliminating unnecessary use helps sustain ecosystems and ensure a reliable supply of high-quality drinking water.”

The city has implemented additional conservation measures at public facilities, reducing irrigation frequencies and durations, limiting operational hours of ornamental fountains, and sharing information with its utility customers.

Certain exceptions to SWFWMD’s restrictions apply to specific situations. For details and more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/SWFWMD-Restrictions.

Residents in The Villages sections of Wildwood receive water through a separate utility provider and should see https://www.districtgov.org/services/utilities/ for additional guidance.
