A person was killed early Sunday in a crash along Interstate 40 East at Jones Sausage Road, near Garner.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the driver of a Lexus will face charges after the Lexus ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a box truck that was parked on the right shoulder waiting for mechanical assistance.

The passenger in the Lexus died at the scene, and the driver was injured and transported to WakeMed. The box truck driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Speeding and alcohol are suspected to be involved, and charges are pending for the driver of the Lexus, State Highway Patrol said.

Multiple lanes were closed from about 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker was there as crews worked to remove pieces of truck from the top of the Lexus.
