Dead fin whale washes up on Oregon coast near Warrenton

  • February 9, 2026

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A dead whale washed up on a beach near Warrenton along the Oregon coast on Saturday morning, according to the Seaside Aquarium.

According to the aquarium, the 46-foot fin whale had been dead for some time before it washed ashore north of Sunset Beach. A necropsy will happen next week to try and determine how the whale died.

The only species of whale larger than a fin whale is the blue whale, and fin whales can reach up to 85 feet and weigh up to 80 tons, according to the aquarium.

The aquarium is encouraging people to visit the carcass, but reminded people to avoid touching the dead animal.

“Any whale, dolphin, porpoise, or pinniped can spread potential diseases to humans and pets,” the aquarium said.
