The aircraft started broadcasting the international general emergency code known as “squawking 7700,” Flight Radar reported.

An AirAsia spokesperson informed the Daily Mail: “Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew observed an alert related to cabin pressure.

Cabin pressure alert

While the cabin pressure remained at a safe level, the captain chose to make a precautionary diversion to Brisbane airport, in line with established operational safety procedures.

The aircraft will undergo a detailed engineering assessment in line with safety protocols.”

The plane’s altitude plummeted from 34,000ft – a standard commercial cruising elevation – to approximately 10,000ft, Flight Radar data showed.

All 142 passengers and the 11-member crew evacuated without incident.

Passenger accommodation provided

Passengers received accommodation offers and service recovery alternatives during the aircraft assessment period.

AirAsia stated it expects the aircraft to resume its Kuala Lumpur journey around 7pm Monday.

Airline General Manager Benyamin Ismail said: “This precautionary diversion was carried out in line with our operational safety procedures. Our flight crew are highly trained in safety procedures and took the appropriate measures for an issue of this nature.

“Guests were kept informed by the crew, and have all received accommodation and food vouchers while travel arrangements are being made.”
