Three ATP tournaments will be held this week, and the ATP Rotterdam Open is the biggest of them all. The tournament is stacked with great matchups from day one onwards, and fans can expect high-quality tennis right from the get-go. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, but who will advance?
ATP Rotterdam Day 1 Predictions
Valentin Royer vs Christopher O’Connell
Head-to-head: first meeting
World #56 Valentin Royer has played some good tennis in his last two matches, but he is still seeking his first win of the season. It won’t be easy against Christopher O’Connell, who is coming with two straight-set wins in the qualifiers and is also looking for his first main-draw win of the season. Royer has the advantage when it comes to serving, although the Australian player can also do some damage from the line. O’Connell plays with variety, and his chip returns can help him get in rallies. It should be a close match, but O’Connell might just have enough to come out on top.
Prediction: O’Connell in 3
Botic van de Zandschulp vs Luka Pavlovic
Head-to-head: first meeting
Botic van de Zandschulp will make his sixth main draw appearance at his home tournament, but has only two wins so far over the course of his career at the ATP Rotterdam Open. He showed some great tennis at the Australian Open, and if he can bring that level this week, he can make a deep run. Luka Pavlovic upset Hamad Medjedovic in the second round of qualifying and will play his first-ever main draw match at the tour-level. This is a big moment for the Frenchman, and his big serve should help him stay close to the Dutch player.
Prediction: Zandschulp in 3
Jaume Munar vs Nicolai Budkov Kjaer
Head-to-head: first meeting
Jaume Munar has made significant improvements to his hard-court game over the past year and has already reached a quarterfinal this season. He will like his chances to make a winning debut in this tournament. Nicolai Budkov Kjaer is a talented prospect, but it will take him some time to get used to this level. Munar is the better and more experienced player right now and should be the man to advance.
Prediction: Munar in 2
Cameron Norrie vs Roberto Bautista Agut
Head-to-head: Norrie 4-1 Bautista Agut
Cameron Norrie has made a positive start to the season and is playing more aggressive tennis than he used to. He looks relaxed and confident on the court, which is always a positive sign for a player. Roberto Bautista Agut couldn’t offer much resistance in his loss to Martin Damm last week, and I can’t see him causing much trouble here either. The Spaniard won the last time these two met, but this has always been a rewarding matchup for the Brit.
Prediction: Norrie in 2
Daniil Medvedev vs Ugo Humbert
Head-to-Head: Medvedev 1-3 Humbert
This is the premier match of Day 1 of the ABN AMRO Open, and neither player would be too pleased to play this match in the opening round. Former champion Daniil Medvedev started his season brilliantly in Adelaide, but he had a shaky Australian Open campaign and was completely outplayed by Learner Tien in the fourth round. However, I expect him to play better on these indoor courts. Ugo Humbert is a fantastic indoor player, but he has never won a match at this tournament before. I am leaning towards Medvedev.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3
