MADISON, Wis. — Winter weather that typically forces Wisconsin golfers indoors transforms into an opportunity at Christy’s Landing, where the annual Super Bowl of Golf celebrates more than three decades of frozen lake tradition.

The event takes place on Super Bowl Sunday, allowing golfers to play on the ice using tennis balls, a single golf club, and Christmas trees planted in the frozen surface as course markers. This year, organizers expected between 200 and 300 participants to take part in the unique winter golf experience.

“The Super Bowl of golf has been around for over 35 years. I worked my first one in 1992,” said Al Hart, a longtime event worker. “Everybody in the neighborhood knows. Drop your Christmas tree off down here after Christmas. We plant them out in the ice. And there’s a few people who I believe have done it all 36 years that we’ve done this.”

Groups of four golfers can tee off every six minutes starting at 9 a.m., with play continuing until Super Bowl kickoff. The format accommodates hundreds of participants throughout the day while maintaining an organized flow of play.

The use of Christmas trees as course markers adds an environmental component to the event. Local residents contribute their holiday trees after Christmas, giving the decorations a second life as part of the golf course layout on the frozen lake surface.

The combination of winter sports, community gathering, and Super Bowl Sunday celebration creates a unique experience that reflects Wisconsin’s embrace of winter activities. Rather than hibernating during the coldest months, events like the Super Bowl of Golf encourage residents to find creative ways to enjoy the outdoors year-round.
