In a statement, the Ellens family said he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

HOLLAND, Mich. — West Michigan is remembering businessman and community leader Denny Ellens, 70, the longtime owner of Hudsonville Ice Cream, following news of his unexpected passing on Saturday.

Ellens purchased the company in 2003 and was a member of the board. He appointed a new CEO, Tina Floyd, in 2023.

In a statement, the Ellens family said he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

“He deeply believed in building a business grounded in integrity, quality, and service to others, and he took great pride in the West Michigan community we call home,” his family said. “His impact will be felt for generations, and we will miss him dearly.”

The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Floyd also released a statement.

“Denny was an incredible visionary leader who led with humility and a strong sense of responsibility to both Hudsonville Ice Cream and his community,” Floyd said. “He was admired by our team and an inspiration to so many who knew him. He will be greatly missed.”
