Reports out of Sweden today have Sporting KC linked with another midfielder, Lasse Berg Johnsen. The 26 year old central midfielder currently plays with Malmo FF in the Swedish Allsvenskan, the country’s top division.
Berg Johnsen joined Malmo in 2023 from Danish club, Randers FC. He’s played 63 times in league play for his current club while also playing in qualifiers for the Champions League and Europa League. He’s scored 13 goals across over 100 games in all competitions.
He has also made three appearances for the Norwegian national team with all of those appearances coming in late 2024 until the middle of 2025. He started a Nations League game against Slovenia and came off the bench for World Cup qualifiers against Israel and Estonia. He hasn’t been part of the squad for Norway’s last few international windows.
From a Sporting perspective, this sort of move makes sense, their midfield is certainly thin at the moment with only four central midfielders (Jacob Bartlett, Zorhan Bassong, Jake Davis, Manu Garcia) with experience at the first team level, and one of those four (Bassong) looks likely to be moving back to the back line to take the left back position. KC’s other midfielders on the roster are Cielo Tschantret, who just signed from Sporting KC II and first round draft pick, Kwaku Agyabeng, so depth is certainly a problem for the midfield and getting more quality there is certainly a must for the team.
From a strictly numbers stand point, Sporting still needs to add to their roster ahead of the MLS season opener as the club currently doesn’t have enough players on the roster who qualify for the senior roster to make them roster compliant. After the transfer saga with Cesar Inga, it’ll be understandable though if Sporting fans don’t get their hopes up here and wait for an official word. The good news in that regard is that according to the same source, Malmo already has his replacement lined up, making the departure of Berg Johnsen easier for the club to stomach.
