When James Franklin moved Ty Howle into a full, on-field coaching job five years ago at Penn State, he charged him with one task: Build the best tight end room in the country.
Three draft picks later, including 2024 Mackey Award winner and first-rounder Tyler Warren, and you can call his work an unqualified success.
It’s why Franklin has high hopes now that he’s promoted Howle to be his first offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, even though the 34-year-old has limited play-calling experience.
“Been waiting for the right opportunity for Ty to take this next step,” Franklin said last week. “Me and Ty see the game in a very, very similar way. And I think he’s going to do a phenomenal job.”
