More than 365 days in advance, ESPN is basically starting its Super Bowl pregame show now with its “Year of the Super Bowl” that will include expanded NFL programming; as well as expanded promotion throughout the Disney empire.

To lead into ESPN’s first Super Bowl production on Feb. 14, 2027, the network has a “12-month, multi-platform celebration,” the 47-year-old company said.

The network recently received official approval for its deal for NFL Media assets, including NFL Network. It began right after Super Bowl for what ESPN called “The Handoff,” which saw Chris Berman hosting “NFL Prime Time” from the field in Santa Clara after the Seahawks win over the Patriots Sunday, followed by Scott Van Pelt on “SportsCenter” in Los Angeles, home of the ESPN’s Super Bowl in a little more than a year.

Plus, it started an ESPN/Disney marketing campaign, “We’re going to the Super Bowl.” ESPN is expected to have many more initiatives both on-air and promotionally.

To twist a Berman-ism, ESPN’s Super Bowl lead-up: Will go all the way.

ESPN is starting a new series called, “I Scored a Touchdown” that spotlights players that reached the endzone with 1-2 minute vignettes that will be featured weekly across all platforms. With it being the 61st Super Bowl, ESPN will showcase 61 players. David Tyree is first up — in the game he made his famous “helmet catch,” he also caught a touchdown in the Giants win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

The ubiquity is all very on-brand for ESPN and Disney — and by design. By the time Joe Buck and Troy Aikman provide the play-by-play and analysis for Super Bowl LXI on Valentine’s Day, 2027, viewers will surely know that ESPN is airing the game.

“This fan-focused initiative unites our Company’s beloved brands with industry-leading storytelling and technology to showcase football’s greatest stories, heroes, and moments like never before,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said. “Across our platforms, screens, and parks, we’ll build momentum throughout the year toward Super Bowl LXI — a monumental event for sports fans everywhere and for ESPN.”
