Aston Villa secured a scrappy late win over Brighton on the night James Milner equalled the Premier League appearance record.
Milner, 40, came off the bench early on at Villa Park for a 653rd top-flight appearance – drawing level with Gareth Barry’s mark.
But an 86th-minute own goal from Jack Hinshelwood marred Milner’s milestone night and secured three points for the hosts which they barely deserved.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “Although we didn’t win it’s still a special night.
“[Milner’s] a role model for the young players, he’s a professional, he’s unbelievable, disciplined.
“It’s no coincidence he’s still proving every week, every day, that he’s capable of playing in the Premier League.
“It’s a pleasure to work with him and we are grateful to have him in our squad, not only as a player, also as a character.”
Villa, who struggled to impose themselves throughout, remain third but extended their lead over Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for the Champions League spots.
Yet defeat was tough on Brighton, who dominated much of the second half.
The Seagulls have won just once in their past 13 league games, slipping from fifth at the end of November to 14th.
“In the key moments, if we are more ruthless, then we score,” added Hurzeler. “In games like this the team who scores first will win it and unfortunately Aston Villa did it out of nowhere with a set-piece.
“I feel sorry for the supporters because they were great, I feel sorry for the team, but we have to take responsibility and we have to keep pushing.
“We have to keep doing these small margins right and then we will get the results and we will sit here at one point and hopefully be a winner.”
Milner replaced Carlos Baleba on 22 minutes – with Hurzeler confirming he made the change so the Cameroon midfielder avoided a second yellow card – and the veteran tested Emi Martinez after the break.
Martinez had already denied Ferdi Kadioglu, turning his shot from the edge of the area on to the bar.
And the Seagulls looked like leaving with a point before Tyrone Mings’ effort went in off Hinshelwood.
Villa’s win comes after they lost their previous two home league games to Everton and Brentford.
Unai Emery said: “We needed to win. We needed to recover confidence through the result, to continue building the team in the structure we have and those three points are really very important.
“We lost two matches and had been feeling so strong here. Today we finished fantastically with the three points.
“I don’t want to speak about other teams, we are focusing on ourselves. We are going to try to focus on each match. Today we [reached] 50 points and it is fantastic.
“Sometimes when you are playing [badly] you are winning, sometimes you are playing an equal match and lose or win. It is football.”
