OSWEGO N.Y. — The City of Oswego’s Mayor’s Office has issued an executive order prohibiting ice fishing and other activities on the Oswego River and its waterways due to safety concerns.

The City cited strong currents and thin ice as significant hazards, noting that “entering onto the frozen Oswego River is foolish and dangerous and endangers the lives of our first responders.”

The order applies to all frozen areas of the river within city limits. Violators may face citations for trespassing, disorderly conduct, and other relevant offenses under New York State law.

Officials also warned that accessing the river through New York State Canal Corporation property is considered trespassing while the canal system is closed for the season.

The executive order takes effect immediately. City officials urge residents to avoid the river and use caution during winter recreation
