Rob Mac and the rest of everyone’s favorite Philadelphian squad may be headed back to TV screens sooner rather than later.

Mac, formerly known professionally as Rob McElhenney, is one of the co-creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The comedy series, which also stars Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Danny DeVito, and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, is among the longest-running sitcoms currently on television with a whopping 17 completed seasons.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will continue with season 18, which has just gotten a major update from Mac. The actor-creator posted a picture of a film slate with a caption that reads “Back in the kitchen,” indicating the commencement of filming for the series. The actual release date for has not yet been revealed.

This comes after FX renewed the series through season 18 all the way back in 2020. At that time, this was a massive renewal that spanned four seasons, guaranteeing It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia seasons 15-18.

With any long-running show comes worry surrounding whether the show can maintain its success throughout the later season. For the most part, Mac and Howerton’s series has done fairly well for itself. Season 15 and 16 both had perfect 100% Tomatometers on Rotten Tomatoes, and season 17 garnered a still-impressive 84%.

This news also puts It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 18 fairly on track with its previously stated filming start window. Back in July, DeVito mentioned that the sitcom would commence filming again at the end of January. Even if it did not hit that mark exactly, this was pretty close to spot on for an early estimate.

The previous season began filming in early fall 2024 and launched in July 2025. With less than a year in between production start and release, it’s conceivable that season 18 could come out later this year.

The series has not yet been renewed for season 19, so the pressure is still on for season 18 to perform well. There have been ongoing concerns about the longevity of the show as it relates to DeVito’s age, for the Frank Reynolds actor will turn 82 late this year.

That said, there are still clear skies ahead for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia right now. With the previous season wrapping up last summer, it is good to hear that the next installment is making swift progress. And perhaps, it might not be the last venture this comedy team makes in Philadelphia.
