ZANESVILLE, Ohio — You may have seen his work outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium or inside the U.S. Capitol.
Now, sculptor Alan Cottrill’s latest creation — a 15-foot, gold-leafed bronze statue of President Donald Trump — is sitting inside his Zanesville foundry, awaiting its permanent home and final payment.
The $300,000 sculpture was completed in early January and commissioned by a cryptocurrency group.
Cottrill said the group has made partial payments but still owes thousands of dollars.
The group said it stands by its commitment to the sculptor and plans to make the final payment.
Inside the bronze foundry, Cottrill and his team work seven days a week.
“My job is making bronze statues,” Cottrill said.
“I have done 400 or so life-size or larger figures,” he said. “I’ll do it ’til I drop.”
The Trump statue weighs about 2,400 pounds.
“Oh geez, that’s bronze,” Cottrill said.
“We hounded away on this, had it done start to finish,” he said.
The sculpture, which rests on its back inside the studio, presented unique artistic challenges — particularly when it came to capturing Trump’s hair.
“His hair — how do you get the wispy bits of hair?” Cottrill said.
“Because you can’t cast fine hair and wispies, so I had to make it thicker than it was and still give a sense of his hair,” he said.
Cottrill said he is waiting for an official unveiling date at Trump National Doral in Florida and said the president is expected to attend.
“This gold leaf in the Florida sun — it’s just going to be brilliant,” he said.
While he said he has enjoyed working on the project, Cottrill acknowledged the statue has taken up significant space in his studio.
“I’d like to get it the hell out of here because we need this space,” he said.
For now, the statue remains in Zanesville — complete, but not yet installed.
