More Spider-Man movies are confirmed to be on the way, and Sony’s plan for the future of the franchise happens to be exactly what it needs. After a few years away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker this July to lead Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s star-studded cast. The Punisher, the Hulk, Scorpion, Tombstone, and more will appear.
The upcoming MCU movie is not the only Spider-Man film with a release date for the wall-crawler. In animation, Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in 2027 to end one of the best sagas in the history of Spider-Man movies. That said, the door will not be closed on the franchise, and its incoming expansion will be what carries Spider-Man releases in the perfect direction.
Two New Spider-Man Spinoff Movies Are Officially In Development

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville officially confirmed that two new Spider-Man spinoff movies are on the way. While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which featured villains like Morbius, Venom, and Kraven the Hunter, is dead, the studio will expand its Spider-Verse animated franchise with two new movies for popular characters.
Previous reports and rumors stated that Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen movies were in development at Sony. While Belson could not say whether there are writers attached to either project, the executive confirmed they are in the works, saying, “I’m not allowed to say. But we are active on both.” On December 7, 2025, Daniel Kaluuya, who plays Spider-Punk, told Deadline that his Spider-Man movie’s script was in the “finishing stages.”
Sony’s New Spider-Man Franchise Plans Are The Perfect Path Forward After The Spider-Verse Ends

With official confirmation from Sony’s bosses about the upcoming Spider-Verse spinoff movies, the future could not look brighter for the animated saga and the Spider-Man franchise as a whole. With the Spider-Verse trilogy set to end in 2027, the assumption has always been that Miles Morales would then make the move to live-action in the MCU or in a standalone franchise at Sony.
While Miles is primed for a live-action future, characters like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk needed to go the animated route for new appearances. After all, if Gwen Stacy were to appear with powers in live-action Marvel movies, it would most likely have to be a variant played by Emma Stone to continue the emotional ties to Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, who returned in 2021.
Stone’s Gwen and the Spider-Verse’s are different in many ways. As for Spider-Punk, with the MCU using the multiverse to bring in Tobey Maguire and Garfield’s Peter Parkers, it would be harder to add in a totally unrelated third multiversal Spider-Man into Marvel’s upcoming packed movies. Sony’s plan of animated spinoffs for Gwen Stacy and Hobie Brown avoids any issues.
The studio would be able to continue using the versions of the characters that fans have already fallen in love with in the Spider-Verse movies. With Miles Morales likely moving to live-action Spider-Man projects, the animated spinoffs also give Sony a way to continue the Spider-Verse franchise without having to put Miles on the center stage again, ushering in a new Spider-Man era.
