A new Frozen short film will be out this fall as part of Disney’s ramp-up to Frozen 3 in theaters next year.
Paul Gitter, executive vice president, global brand commercialization, Disney Consumer Products mentioned the upcoming short in an interview with License Global.
“We’re excited to kick off the countdown to Frozen 3 with a new short this October,” he explained, “ahead of our biggest ever cross-company movie marketing campaign in 2027.”
The announcement came in response to License Global’s question about building excitement for Frozen leading up to the 2027 threequel.
Frozen has proven to be a powerhouse brand for Disney Consumer Products and is expected to be one of our largest efforts ever with strong execution planned across the entire Disney ecosystem– from new in-park experiences like Disneyland Paris’ World of Frozen to new film and streaming content. Our strategy continues to serve core fans with new show-to-shelf products tied to short form content, as well as expand to new demographics and categories. With over 10 years of content and more on the way, fans of the franchise span generations – girls who experienced the release of the original Frozen film are now young adults, girls who watched Frozen 2 are now tweens and teens and so on. While our core girl audience is growing up, their love for the story remains unchanged. Therefore, our strategy is beginning to look at brands that resonate with older audiences like PANDORA, allowing young women to express their fandom in subtle, more sophisticated ways. Frozen Fan Fest in October has become a strong annual event for our fans to celebrate their love for the story and characters, with new product launches and digital content. We’re excited to kick off the countdown to Frozen 3 with a new short this October, ahead of our biggest ever cross-company movie marketing campaign in 2027.
Gitter did not say how the new short would be released. Though short films are often paired with a full-length theatrical film, Disney doesn’t have any major movie releases this October. The closest would be Hexed, an animated film coming on November 25, 2026. The short may instead just be released on Disney+.
Previous Frozen short films include Frozen Fever (2015), the holiday special Olaf’s Frozen Adventure (2017), and Once Upon a Snowman (2020). There have also been two series of shorts: At Home with Olaf (2020) and Olaf Presents (2021).
Frozen 3 is scheduled for release on November 24, 2027. Production recently began, with Josh Gad returning to voice Olaf. Kristen Bell (Anna) and Idina Menzel (Elsa) will also return. Frozen 4 is in development, too.
Jennifer Lee is writing and directing the sequels. She stepped down from her position as Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios to focus on the Frozen franchise.
