State Rep. Daniel Holt speaks at a news conference at the State Capitol in July. Holt resigned his seat today to take a job at the Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources next week.

State Rep. Daniel Holt resigned from the state House today following his appointment to serve as an executive assistant to Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources Chair Dawn Chang.

Holt’s last day in office was Friday. He’s scheduled to start at DLNR on Tuesday.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the area Representative for House District 28 for nearly a decade,” Holt (D, Sand Island-Iwilei-Chinatown) said in a statement. “It has been an honor to work alongside the community where I was raised, collaborating with youth, advocating for our kupuna and building meaningful connections.”

Before he was elected to the House in 2016, Holt held several positions within the Legislature, including bill researcher for the Senate Ways and Means Committee, legislative aide to the late Sen. Gilbert Kahele, committee clerk for the Senate Special Committee on Accountability, and legislative director in the Senate President’s office.

In 2014, Holt was appointed Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms by the state Senate.

House Speaker Nadine Nakamura praised Holt’s service in the House, highlighting his leadership as co-chair of the Native Hawaiian Caucus and his work supporting nonprofits organizations affected by federal funding cuts.

Don’t miss out on what’s happening!

“Rep. Holt has an accomplished record of public service in the Legislature,” Nakamura said in a statement. “We wish him success in his new role.”

The Hawaii Democratic Party now has 30 days to give Gov. Josh Green a list of potential candidates to replace Holt in the House. Green will then have 60 days to select Holt’s replacement, the House said.
